President Donald Trump has issued an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” amid escalating tensions with Canada. Trump accused Canada of being difficult to deal with and claimed they were taking advantage of the United States. He emphasized that despite Canada’s desire to be treated like a state, they are not one. Trump justified his actions by stating that Canadian officials have mistreated the U.S., labeling them as “nasty people.”
The strained relations between the two countries intensified after failed trade negotiations, with both sides accusing each other of making last-minute changes. Prime Minister Mark Carney deemed the agreement unworkable, leading to the unveiling of retaliatory measures by the Canadian government effective September 8.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, a former North Dakota governor, expressed pride in the decision to rename the lake, stating that the nation’s borders and waters should reflect American greatness. However, Canadian officials reacted with disbelief on social media, affirming that the body of water will continue to be called Lake Ontario.
In response to the renaming, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston criticized the move as “foolishness,” asserting that the lake will always be known as Lake Ontario. The situation was likened by Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew to an aging rock star playing outdated hits, describing Trump’s actions as uninspired.
Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, lies between Ontario and New York and derives its name from the Huron Indigenous word “oniatarí:io,” meaning “lake of shining waters.” Carney highlighted the historical significance of the name, dating back over 400 years before the formation of both Canada and the U.S.
This move echoes a similar action by Trump last year, where he renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America through an executive order. While the change applies mainly to U.S. federal documents, some online map services have adopted the new name. This geographic renaming sparked controversy, leading to clashes with media outlets and highlighting the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and its northern neighbor.
