Starbucks Faces Lawsuit Over Misleading “Sugar-Free” Protein Drinks

Date:

A recent lawsuit filed against Starbucks alleges that the coffee giant falsely marketed eight of its protein beverages as “sugar-free” when they actually contain between 13 and 21 grams of sugar per venti-size serving due to the naturally occurring sugar in milk. The lawsuit, filed in a Seattle federal court, accuses Starbucks of taking advantage of the protein trend and customer preferences.

Starbucks introduced these beverages in September 2025, promoting them as part of a protein-focused lineup to cater to customers seeking more protein in their diets. Despite being labeled as “sugar-free,” the drinks, such as the Sugar-Free Caramel Protein Matcha, contain a significant amount of sugar, equivalent to several teaspoons of sugar or the amount found in a standard Kit Kat bar.

Starbucks has defended its labeling practices, stating that it has provided clear information about the nutritional content and customization options of its protein beverages. The lawsuit questions whether the labeling of these drinks as “sugar-free” is misleading and points out that the milk used in these beverages naturally contains lactose, a type of sugar.

Consumer protection laws in both the U.S. and Canada have specific requirements for products to be labeled as “sugar-free,” including restrictions on the amount of sugar allowed in such products. The lawsuit seeks damages for false advertising and violations of consumer protection laws, aiming to represent consumers who purchased these drinks in California, New York, and Washington.

This legal action raises concerns about the accurate labeling of food and beverage products to ensure that consumers can make informed choices about their dietary intake, especially for those who are actively monitoring their sugar consumption for health reasons.
