Mitchell Lawrie, a talented young darts player from Scotland, made history by claiming his third senior men’s title at the WDF Irish Classic in Killarney. This achievement, just four days after his 15th birthday, surpasses the previous record set by Luke Littler. In an impressive performance, Lawrie defeated Ronan McDonagh in the final match with four 180s and an average score of 98.60, securing a 5-1 victory. Prior to this, he also clinched the Irish Classic Youths title by defeating Kaya Basal with an average score of 90.95.
Lawrie’s family, including his father Fraser and grandfather Dougie, were present at the INEC Arena in Kerry, Ireland, to support him during his remarkable win. Notably, Lawrie achieved this feat at a younger age than Littler, setting a new milestone in his budding career. He is now set to compete in the upcoming WDF world championships in Lakeside.
While Lawrie gears up for future competitions, the reigning PDC World Champion will be preparing to defend his title at Alexandra Palace. Despite not being eligible to compete against Littler in PDC events until he turns 16, Lawrie’s family remains proud and supportive of his journey. In an interview with The Sun, Dougie Lawrie emphasized that they want Mitchell to carve his own path in darts and not be compared to Littler.
Dougie revealed that he introduced Mitchell to the sport of darts from a young age, instilling in him a sense of aggression that has contributed to his success on the oche. As Lawrie continues to make waves in the darts world, fans are reminded of the legendary players from the past golden era of darts, including Eric Bristow, Jocky Wilson, John Lowe, and many more.
