Iran announced on Wednesday that it had carried out attacks on 10 ships in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the United States. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles at a U.S. base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, they targeted two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers that were attempting to navigate through a restricted area in the Strait of Hormuz.
The series of attacks in the strategic waterway led to a sharp increase in oil prices, with the international Brent crude benchmark surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July. The conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen has further fueled uncertainty in energy markets. The recent Houthi attack on Saudi cities resulted in significant damage to oil installations, causing fires that were visible from space and injuring dozens of people.
The surge in oil prices has had a direct impact on consumers, with gasoline prices in the U.S. reaching an average of $4.15 per gallon, marking a 26% increase from the previous year. Diesel prices also soared to $5.90 per gallon, representing a 59% year-over-year increase. The escalating tensions have led to concerns about the possibility of a lasting resolution before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
In response to the heightened conflict, Iran disclosed the establishment of a restricted maritime zone extending from Chabahar in Iran into parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The precise coordinates of this zone are yet to be announced. Meanwhile, a drone strike on an oil tanker carrying two million barrels of Iraqi fuel in Iraqi waters caused a fire, although no casualties were reported among the crew members.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported incidents of vessels being attacked in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman during military activities in the region. Iran’s threats to oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports have added to the growing concerns over the security of maritime trade routes. The conflict has severely disrupted transit through the vital Strait of Hormuz, impacting global oil and natural gas shipments.
The U.S. military has responded by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports and guiding tankers through the strait to mitigate the impact of the conflict on oil supplies.
