Aldi is set to implement a change in its own-brand beer packaging to reduce unnecessary waste. This alteration will be implemented in all Aldi stores across the UK, covering more than 1,000 locations in England, Scotland, and Wales.
The supermarket chain, ranked as the UK’s fourth largest, will introduce Snap Pack packaging for its own-label beers, aiming to eliminate 412 tonnes of packaging annually. The innovative Snap Pack format utilizes adhesive to hold the cans together, replacing the conventional cardboard sleeves.
The transition to Snap Pack packaging will be phased in by 2025 and will affect four-pack assortments of Aldi’s Galahad, Sainte Etienne, and Brasserie beers. Currently, these multipacks come with cardboard sleeves to secure the cans, a practice that will soon be replaced.
Luke Emery, Aldi UK’s national sustainability director, highlighted the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Emery emphasized that by adopting Snap Pack packaging, Aldi is taking significant steps to reduce waste without compromising product quality or convenience, emphasizing the positive impact of this small change.
The initiative aligns with Aldi’s broader sustainability goals, including recent collaborations such as partnering with The Hidden Sea to launch a sustainable Chardonnay that removes plastic waste from the ocean with each bottle sold.
While cardboard beer packaging is commonly perceived as environmentally friendly compared to plastic, it still has environmental implications, including greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation risks. Snap Pack, pioneered by Carlsberg, aims to minimize or eliminate plastic usage by bonding cans together with an easily separable adhesive, reducing environmental impact and reliance on fossil fuel-based materials.
In other news, Aldi shoppers can anticipate fresh SpecialBuy products, including a gas-powered pizza oven and related tools, as well as the popular Roosters chicken range inspired by a renowned restaurant chain, offering a variety of affordable chicken products and side dishes.
This move by Aldi demonstrates the supermarket’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in packaging practices, aligning with consumer preferences for environmentally conscious products.
