Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom for the timing of the Champion of Champions event on Monday. The frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days prior.
Murphy was unexpectedly placed in the tournament’s opening match and faced a disappointing 4-1 loss to Lei Peifan. The 43-year-old disclosed that he was informed about his Monday match while returning from Nanjing, learning about the event’s schedule on the day of the competition.
After his defeat, Murphy criticized the group setup, stating to ITV4, “I conduct myself as professionally as I possibly can. I try and treat the game with an incredible amount of respect.” He expressed his disappointment with Matchroom’s handling of the tournament draw and group assignments, considering it disrespectful and unprofessional.
In contrast, players such as Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who did not participate in the recent International Championship, are scheduled to play later in the Champion of Champions event, unlike Murphy who played on the opening day.
In response to Murphy’s complaints, Matchroom issued a statement acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to player priorities and fairness in group arrangements based on seeding. They recognized the scheduling challenges and pledged to improve future event planning for transparency and fairness.
Meanwhile, on the Champion of Champions’ opening day, Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei in the evening session. The tournament continues with matches like Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski and Allen vs Ziao Xintong, among others, scheduled for the following days.
