A 15-year-old girl, part of the global issue of child brides, escaped from a 35-year-old man who had subjected her to sexual abuse. Hailing from Tanzania, Latifa, one of six siblings, was forced into marriage at a young age and endured hunger while yearning for education. Despite her challenging circumstances, she dreamed of becoming a doctor to help sick children.
Tragically, her father arranged her marriage to Salum, a stranger, without her understanding the implications. After a tearful wedding ceremony, Salum took her to Dar es Salaam, where the abuse began. Isolated and burdened with household chores, Latifa suffered physical and emotional torment, leading to the birth of her daughter, Zainabu.
Salum’s cruelty escalated, culminating in him abandoning Latifa and their baby. Alone and destitute, Latifa resorted to begging for sustenance at a local market, enduring hardship with her infant daughter. Fortunately, she found refuge with a woman named Happy, offering her a semblance of security and care.
Now, with the support of Plan International, Latifa has regained her independence, securing her own income through savings initiatives. Determined to provide a better life for Zainabu, she is committed to ensuring her daughter’s education and freedom from forced marriages.
