“Pressure Mounts on Farage Over MP’s Controversial Comments”

Date:

Nigel Farage is under pressure to disavow one of his own MPs who expressed frustration at the prevalence of Black and Asian individuals in advertisements. Sarah Pochin, a Reform UK MP, made these remarks during a TalkTV appearance when responding to a caller’s query about demographic representation in TV ads.

Following the caller’s assertion that ads were unfairly portraying white people, Pochin, the Runcorn and Helsby MP, agreed, stating, “It bothers me to see ads predominantly featuring non-white individuals.” When pressed by the host, Peter Cardwell, she reiterated her stance, criticizing what she described as an overwhelming “woke” influence in television.

Pochin emphasized that the current advertising landscape did not accurately mirror society, particularly neglecting the representation of white families. She attributed this shift to what she called the “woke liberati” mindset prevailing in the industry, asserting that it did not align with the demographics of areas like Runcorn.

Anna Turley, Chair of the Labour Party, condemned Pochin’s comments, calling for clarity from Farage on his stance regarding her views. Turley criticized the focus on skin color in defining British people, deeming it divisive rather than unifying.

In response to the backlash, Pochin clarified her statement, asserting that she was highlighting the industry’s excessive focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) rather than expressing racial bias. She apologized for any offense caused and pledged to communicate more precisely in the future.
