The United Nations voted on Friday to transition from the 16th-century Mercator global map to a more accurate representation of countries’ actual sizes. This resolution, initiated by African nations, aims to combat the perception that Africa is marginalized. Togo spearheaded the move as part of the African Union’s campaign to reduce the use of the Mercator map, which distorts landmass sizes by exaggerating those closer to the poles. The Mercator projection makes Greenland appear similar in size to Africa, despite Africa being approximately 14 times larger.
Togo’s Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, emphasized the importance of a fair map, stating, “A fair world begins with a fair map.” The resolution advocates for the Equal Earth projection, known for its accurate depiction of continent sizes. It is emphasized that the resolution is not binding and does not challenge the Mercator projection’s suitability for maritime and aerial navigation.
The resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly with 164 in favor, one against (the United States), and six abstentions. The U.S. opposed the resolution, citing it as promoting an “ideological agenda” and diverting attention from genuine international issues.
Togo plans to update its school geography materials by the end of the year, becoming the first country to do so. Dussey aims to set an example for other nations by transitioning away from the Mercator projection. He intends to encourage governments, schools, international organizations, and technology companies to embrace the Equal Earth projection for a more accurate world view.
Furthermore, Togo will engage with African Union members and allies from various regions to facilitate broader adoption of the Equal Earth projection. Dussey highlighted the importance of involving mapping, GPS, and location-based technology companies in discussions about future steps. He framed the map transition as part of Africa’s broader efforts to address colonial legacies, emphasizing that it is not an attack on any specific civilization. Dussey stressed that as the world evolves, so too does Africa.
