A recent fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, has caused damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the area. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) has stated that it is too early to determine if this incident will impact the project’s timeline.
The fire occurred near the waterfront of the hamlet on Wednesday night. Naujaat’s senior administrative officer, Chantal Pelletier, confirmed that the local fire department promptly responded to the emergency.
The NHC mentioned that the construction materials were originally allocated for an eight-unit public housing development. A spokesperson for the corporation noted that they are currently awaiting the fire chief’s report and collaborating with the project contractor and authorities to evaluate the extent of the damage.
The completion date for the eight-plex project is set for June 2027. The NHC spokesperson emphasized that it is premature to assess the impact of the fire on the project timeline at this stage.
Regarding the cause of the fire, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spokesperson indicated that they have no details to share at this time or confirm if an investigation is underway.
