A significant change is on the horizon for phone users in the UK, urging homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have facilitated communication for years are being phased out in favor of innovative technology known as Digital Voice, which utilizes broadband for making calls.
This upgrade is not just about keeping up with modern demands but also about enhancing reliability and introducing new functionalities like improved call clarity, call forwarding to smartphones, and enhanced call screening to prevent scams and unwanted marketing messages.
Set to take effect in January 2027, the major transition has prompted BT to launch an awareness campaign, spearheaded by Clare Balding, urging households to assess their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era.
This initiative aligns with recent research indicating that many Britons tend to procrastinate on essential tasks, assuming that as long as something is functional, immediate action is unnecessary.
Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly to communication from service providers to ensure uninterrupted services, assuring that BT will provide guidance throughout the process. Customers are assured that they will likely retain their numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable during the transition to Digital Voice, requiring most households to simply connect their existing phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional wall sockets.
While exceptions may arise, BT advises customers to contact their provider if they encounter any issues during the transition. Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, stressed the significance of embracing digital landlines as a crucial upgrade to the UK’s communication infrastructure, emphasizing the benefits of improved reliability and security for all users.
BT also highlighted the need for customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform their providers promptly to ensure appropriate support arrangements are made.
Digital Voice, BT’s latest home phone service, leverages broadband technology to replace copper connections, offering advanced features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to mobile phones. It promises enhanced call quality and eliminates issues like crackling conversations, albeit requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.
For most households, transitioning to Digital Voice will not disrupt their phone usage habits, as the cost of the new service is bundled with the broadband package price without additional charges.
