“Beware! Warmer Weather Sparks Surge in Maggot Infestations”

Date:

Households are being cautioned to be extra vigilant about their bins as the warmer weather conditions can lead to a surge in maggot presence. The increase in temperatures accelerates the decomposition of food waste, attracting flies that lay eggs in bins, ultimately resulting in potential infestations.

According to Wheeldon Brothers, this issue is more prevalent during the spring and summer seasons. James Ward highlighted that with the rise in temperatures, flies become more active, turning bins into potential breeding grounds if not managed effectively.

To prevent maggots from invading bins, ensuring that the bin lid is securely closed is crucial in preventing flies from accessing the waste. Ward emphasized the importance of bagging or wrapping food waste before disposal to mitigate maggot infestations.

Maintaining a clean bin is essential, as any residue can attract maggots. Regularly cleaning the bin helps eliminate conditions favorable for maggot development. Additionally, placing bins in shaded areas can help slow down the waste breakdown process, reducing fly attraction.

In case maggots appear, a quick solution recommended by the waste specialist is pouring boiling water directly onto them to eradicate them almost instantly. However, caution should be exercised when handling hot water for this purpose.
