Roku Launches AI-Driven Channel, Faces Criticism

Date:

Artificial intelligence has ventured into the realm of TV programming with its very own channel on the popular streaming platform, the Roku Channel.

Roku discreetly introduced Fairground AI Creator TV, a channel entirely driven by AI-generated content, on its streaming service without a public announcement. Cord Cutters News was the initial source to reveal this addition to Roku’s lineup.

However, the response from online audiences suggests that viewers may not be embracing this new channel eagerly.

Critics like Frank Landymore from Futurism and Bradly Shankar from MobileSyrup have expressed strong disapproval of Roku’s move, labeling it as an inundation of subpar AI content.

Fairground AI operates as a FAST channel, offering free, ad-supported streaming television. While Canada boasts around 200 FAST channels on the Roku Channel, Fairground AI is not currently part of this lineup. The company has not disclosed any plans regarding the channel’s availability in Canada.

Roku, a leading player in the streaming industry, was recently acquired by Fox in a deal worth $22 billion US, granting access to over 100 million households globally.

The introduction of the AI channel aligns with the trend of increasing AI-generated content across various platforms. Tribeca Festival featured an AI-generated movie earlier this year, and Hasbro announced plans to develop AI-powered versions of its iconic characters. Concurrently, human web traffic is decreasing in comparison to AI-generated content.

Colin Petrie-Norris, the CEO of Fairground AI, anticipates a similar transformative journey for AI content creators as witnessed in the evolution of YouTube creators.

Fenwick McKelvey, a professor at Concordia University, anticipates a shift towards cost-effective and engaging content on streaming platforms like Roku. However, the reception of the AI channel remains uncertain.

While AI-generated content is gaining traction, concerns persist regarding copyright adherence and privacy protection within the AI industry. The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists advocates against substituting human performers with AI and urges for stricter regulations.

The unresolved challenges concerning artist compensation and cultural funding underscore the prioritization of economic opportunities in the AI landscape.

Fairground AI’s channel expansion to multiple platforms signifies the growing interest in AI-generated content across streaming services.

The evolution of AI content creation is expected to mirror the trajectory of mainstream online content creation, with potential controversies and transformations.
