Rachel Reeves’s husband’s emails are set to be released later today amidst an ongoing dispute regarding their rented family residence.
This development follows the Chancellor’s acknowledgment last night of an “unintentional error” in failing to secure a license for renting out their Dulwich property. The property in south London, jointly owned with her husband, was listed for sale after the family relocated to No11 Downing Street post Labour’s electoral triumph last summer.
A spokesperson from No 10 stated this afternoon, “Upon reviewing the emails exchanged by the Chancellor’s spouse, new details have emerged. This information has been shared with the Prime Minister and his independent advisor.”
Despite this revelation, Downing Street emphasized the Prime Minister’s continued confidence in the Chancellor and assured that Ms. Reeves will present the Budget on November 26. This reassurance came after Mr. Starmer expressed his support for Ms. Reeves on Wednesday evening following her apology for renting out their family property without the necessary license.
In her communication with the PM, the Chancellor expressed regret that she and her family were unaware of the requirement for a “selective license” in their Southwark locality in London, where they leased their property for £3,200 monthly upon moving to No 11.
Southwark Council mandates obtaining a license in advance for renting out properties in specific areas.
Ms. Reeves further explained, “Unintentionally, we were unaware of the licensing requirement, and hence did not acquire the license prior to renting out the property. This was an oversight. Upon being made aware, immediate steps were taken, and the license application has been submitted. I sincerely apologize for this mistake and am open to addressing any inquiries.”
In his response, Mr. Starmer indicated his satisfaction that the issue can be resolved after consulting with his ethics advisor. He stated, “I have consulted with my Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards this evening.
“He has advised me that given your inadvertent lapse in obtaining the necessary rental property license and your prompt corrective actions, including your apology, further investigation is unnecessary.”
The PM commented, “It is unfortunate that the appropriate license was not sought earlier, and it is commendable that you have taken the necessary steps today to rectify this. Your handling of this matter demonstrates the urgency and seriousness it warrants.”
Local councils possess the authority to mandate individuals renting out their residences in specific areas to obtain a selective license. This measure aims to safeguard tenants from substandard rental properties and can also be implemented due to concerns about ongoing antisocial behavior issues in rental accommodations.
