“Christmas & New Year Bank Holidays Impact Benefit Payments”

Date:

Thousands of individuals expecting benefits like Universal Credit will experience changes in their payment schedules next month due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year bank holidays.

Christmas Day is set for a Thursday this year, with Boxing Day following on Friday. If your benefit payment falls on these days, anticipate receiving it a day earlier on Wednesday, December 24, as benefits are not distributed on bank holidays. Similarly, with New Year’s Day landing on a Thursday, payments scheduled for that day should arrive on Wednesday, December 31.

Although the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has yet to confirm the official timetable for Christmas and New Year benefit payments, this adjustment aligns with past years’ practices.

It’s essential to manage your finances wisely if you receive your payment earlier, as it will need to last longer until the subsequent payment arrives.

The frequency of benefit payments varies depending on the type of benefit. For instance, Universal Credit is paid on a fixed day each month, while Tax Credits are typically disbursed every four weeks or weekly. Child Benefit payments usually occur every four weeks on Mondays or Tuesdays.

If you encounter delays in receiving your benefit payment, verify the date on your award notice and bank account first. If the payment is overdue and not received, contact the relevant helpline, bearing in mind that they may not be operational on bank holidays.
