Police have recently conducted a significant operation leading to the closure of a major illegal streaming platform that provided unauthorized access to premium content from Sky TV. The operation, which took place in Manchester, resulted in the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of equipment worth £750,000.
The investigation was initiated following reports of suspicious activities by Sky, indicating a large-scale illegal streaming operation. The suspects were allegedly involved in running an unlawful IPTV service catering to millions of users across the UK. One suspect is believed to have profited over £3 million from the operation. Sky confirmed that the shutdown of the illegal service caused disruptions nationwide.
While homes that accessed the illegal streams have not been targeted by law enforcement, they will no longer be able to view the content on their TVs. Detective Constable Jordan Day from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) emphasized the criminal nature of such services, highlighting the substantial profits generated by organized criminal networks.
Matt Hibbert, Group Director of Anti-Piracy at Sky, commended the actions taken against the pirate operation, stressing the importance of protecting content investments and collaborating with law enforcement to dismantle illegal networks. He also warned viewers about the risks associated with illegal streaming, citing security threats like malware.
The operation serves as a reminder that piracy does not come without consequences, and efforts to safeguard broadcasting integrity and consumer safety will continue.
