“Dame Jilly Cooper Dies from Accidental Fall”

Dame Jilly Cooper’s cause of death was disclosed following an inquest held recently. The renowned author, famous for her provocative novels such as Riders, Rivals, and Polo, sustained a fatal head injury in a fall at her residence in Gloucestershire. Dame Jilly was discovered by her family at her home in Bisley on October 4 around 5 pm.

According to the Gloucestershire Coroners’ Court, Dame Jilly was initially conscious and was taken by paramedics to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. However, her condition worsened, leading to her passing away in the hospital at 8:30 am on October 5.

The senior coroner for Gloucestershire, Katy Skerrett, concluded that Dame Jilly’s death was accidental, resulting from a traumatic subdural haematoma. The coroner explained that Dame Jilly had suffered an unobserved fall at her residence on October 4, possibly down a flight of stairs, causing a severe head injury.

There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fall, and Dame Jilly passed away the next day, with her family present. The coroner extended heartfelt condolences to Dame Jilly’s family.

It was reported that Dame Jilly had fallen down a staircase, evidenced by a trail of blood in that area of her home. Despite being initially alert, she complained of a severe headache. An urgent CT scan revealed a skull fracture, which was deemed a catastrophic head injury by medical professionals.

Dame Jilly’s GP, Dr. William Nattress, confirmed that she had experienced two previous falls in 2018 and September 2024. Just before her tragic demise, she had visited the set of Rivals, a Disney+ adaptation of her popular novel.

Tributes poured in following Dame Jilly’s unexpected death at the age of 88. Readers, including Queen Elizabeth, praised her as a “legend” and a cherished friend. Camilla, a close friend of Dame Jilly, acknowledged her groundbreaking literary contributions and expressed deep sympathy for her family.

Known for her sensational novels exploring scandal and infidelity in high society, Dame Jilly’s works have captivated audiences for over five decades. Her passing has left a void in the lives of her children, Felix and Emily, who fondly remember her as a beacon of light.

Hailing from Yorkshire, Dame Jilly’s career spanned journalism and book publishing, with her works being adapted for television over the years. She received prestigious accolades, including the Comedy Women In Print lifetime achievement award in 2019 and a damehood in 2024 for her exceptional literary and charitable contributions.
