Passport Machine Malfunction at Tenerife Airport Traps Passenger

Date:

Tenerife’s main airport faced disruption when passport machines malfunctioned, leading to one passenger’s arm becoming trapped in the gates. Travelers criticized the airport for long queues at biometric passport checks, with machines either not working or rejecting valid passports.

In a chaotic scene, one woman had her arm stuck in closing gates and had to be released by a single staff member amidst dealing with a large crowd. Airlines like Ryanair had warned passengers of delays and advised arriving early due to understaffing at passport control.

The introduction of the new EU entry-exit system at Tenerife airport, requiring photos and fingerprints, is expected to cause further delays. The British Embassy acknowledged potential issues at all Spanish airports due to the system. Passengers at Madrid are reportedly queuing for over an hour.

Expressing frustration, travelers demanded improvements at Tenerife airport to handle the influx of tourists efficiently. They criticized the malfunctioning biometric machines for creating chaos and causing extensive delays.

Tenerife’s local government recognized the need for better service at the airport and vowed to address the issues, including ensuring the proper functioning of biometric machines. Despite efforts, travelers remain dissatisfied with the airport’s operations.
