The debut of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham encountered a setback during the initial stages. The practice and qualifying sessions for the sole IndyCar event in Canada were called off on Friday due to the incomplete track, which prevented officials from conducting the final safety inspection. The organizers indicated their intention to accommodate all of the missed track activities on Saturday’s busy schedule.
This marks the first year that Markham has hosted the event, following its relocation from Exhibition Place in Toronto, where it had been held since its inception in 1986. IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment over the delayed track build despite considerable assistance from the on-site team. He acknowledged the strong fan turnout as a testament to Ontario’s enthusiastic support for the sport.
Local fans, Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo, who have been attending the race for two decades, drove to Markham from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively. Coburn shared mixed feelings about the postponement of practice and qualifying, emphasizing the importance of ensuring track safety to avoid any mishaps that could tarnish the event’s reputation.
The move of the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September last year. The newly constructed temporary circuit, situated between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407, faced challenges with incomplete features such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments for marshals.
The event received financial support from the Ontario and federal governments, with investments totaling $5 million. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti disclosed that the city’s capital spending on race-related infrastructure surpassed $12 million. Despite the inconveniences, Friday’s activities off the track proceeded as planned, including autograph sessions with drivers.
The upcoming Saturday schedule will be packed with IndyCar practice sessions and the qualifying round, following the completion of the track preparations. The organizers expressed confidence in the circuit’s quality and thanked the city of Markham for its contributions to creating a thrilling racing environment. In addition to IndyCar races, other series like USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series will also entertain spectators on the road course this weekend.
As the anticipation builds for the event, Stobo hinted at not returning for future editions after experiencing the challenges of the current setup.
