“Nutrien Civic Centre in Sussex Reopens Amid Funding Concerns”

Date:

The Nutrien Civic Centre in Sussex is set to reopen to the public this Friday, just six days after temporarily closing due to financial issues. Executive director Stefanie McFarlane confirmed that the Kings Regional Service Commission provided a cheque covering funding until the end of August, after withholding a larger payment previously.

Initially planning to remain closed until securing a sustainable funding plan, McFarlane had a change of heart during the closure when someone sought a shower provided through their partnership with the Salvation Army. This incident prompted her to propose reopening the centre, emphasizing the importance of providing essential services to those in need.

Efforts are underway to explore new revenue streams to reduce reliance on municipal funding, with community members offering suggestions to support the centre financially. Concerns have been raised by some member municipalities regarding payment calculations and financial management practices at the facility.

Despite facing challenges, McFarlane expressed gratitude for the outpouring of community support and emphasized the collective commitment to preserving the centre for future generations. Plans for long-term sustainability and financial transparency are being developed in collaboration with the commission and newly appointed CEO Matt Moore.
