Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his longtime chief of staff, Katie Telford, have ventured into the entertainment industry by launching a new media and entertainment production company named Hope & Hard Work. The company’s moniker is a nod to a slogan used during Trudeau’s tenure as prime minister. Hope & Hard Work will focus on producing a variety of content, including documentaries, docuseries, television series, and feature films, with several projects already in progress.
One of the upcoming projects is “Closer by the Sea,” a television adaptation of Perry Chafe’s popular coming-of-age novel set in Newfoundland. Additionally, Toronto author Uzma Jalaluddin’s mystery novel, “Detective Aunty,” is also being adapted for television, with Trudeau and Telford serving as executive producers. Trudeau and Telford emphasize that their lineup is diverse and carefully selected to offer compelling storytelling that resonates with audiences both in Canada and internationally.
Trudeau and Telford expressed their belief in the unifying power of storytelling in a world that can often feel divided. They aim to create narratives that foster empathy and understanding, bridging differences and promoting shared experiences. The duo’s initiative mirrors similar moves by other prominent figures, such as former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, who launched Higher Ground production company in 2018. In a similar vein, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, established Archewell Productions in 2020 after stepping back from their royal duties.
