“Lost Tortoise Molly Found 20km Away: Rescued and Reunited”

Date:

Molly, an African spurred tortoise, was discovered meandering at a slow pace near a vast wetland in Manitoba’s Interlake, far from her natural habitat in the Sahara desert. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at Oak Hammock Marsh, along with her colleagues, rescued the 36-kilogram tortoise after receiving reports of unusual sightings for several days.

Initially mistaken for a snapping turtle native to the area, the true identity of the tortoise was confirmed when a sighting was logged on the iNaturalist app. Upon learning of Molly’s presence, Malchuk and her team quickly located the tortoise in the parking lot of the marsh, where she stood out due to her massive size.

The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh cared for Molly, offering her cucumbers and flower petals, and providing guided tours until her rightful owners were located through a social media post. Molly’s family, who had raised her for 15 years since she was a baby, were reunited with her on July 22.

It was discovered that Molly had escaped through a gap in the family’s backyard fence during renovations, showcasing the resourcefulness of tortoises in finding a way out. Despite the mystery of how Molly ended up 20 kilometers away at the marsh, some speculate that a well-meaning individual may have relocated her to what they believed was a suitable habitat.

The journey of Molly from her home to Oak Hammock Marsh remains a puzzling feat, with theories suggesting she may have traveled the distance on her own. Malchuk emphasized the resilience and determination of Molly, leaving the exact circumstances of her journey shrouded in mystery.
