A police officer in Calgary accused of two murders will face trial after a preliminary inquiry lasting eight days. Constable Craig Stothard, aged 52, is charged with second-degree murder in the deaths of Wesley Davidson and Levon Boyce Fox, who were shot in May 2023 following a slow-speed chase along Memorial Drive. Stothard allegedly fired at the victims while they were in a stolen cube van, resulting in the deaths of Davidson and Fox, with Fox’s brother sustaining injuries.
A publication ban was imposed at the start of the hearing to safeguard Stothard’s right to a fair trial. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team pressed charges against Stothard last summer after a two-year investigation. Stothard was released on bail pending the trial, and he is currently on leave with pay from the Calgary Police Service.
The case will transition from Alberta’s Court of Justice to the Court of King’s Bench, where the trial dates will be scheduled by Prosecutor Jeff Rudiak and defense lawyer Don MacLeod in the upcoming weeks.
