Living in a Box Lead Singer Richard Darbyshire Dies at 65

Date:

Richard Darbyshire, the lead singer of the band Living in a Box, has passed away at the age of 65, as confirmed by his grieving family.

In 1985, Darbyshire joined the emerging band as the vocalist and guitarist, alongside drummer Anthony ‘Tich’ Critchlow and keyboardist Marcus Vere.

Originating from Sheffield, the band achieved worldwide success with their debut single, also named Living in a Box, in 1987.

After disagreements arose during the recording of their third album due to changes at the band’s record label, Darbyshire left the group in 1989.

In a social media statement, Marcus and Tich expressed their deep sorrow over Darbyshire’s passing, highlighting his exceptional vocal and musical abilities and his pivotal role in the band’s success.

Following his time with Living in a Box, Darbyshire pursued a solo music career, releasing his debut album, How Many Angels, in 1994, with contributions from singer Lisa Stansfield and songwriter Frank Musker.

The musician’s family announced his death on Monday, November 10, noting that while they are grieving, his music and legacy will endure.

No specific cause of death was disclosed.

Living in a Box regrouped in 2016 with a new vocalist, Kenny Thomas, and is currently on tour with their third singer, Bryan Chambers.

Prior to his passing, Darbyshire was actively involved in songwriting workshops in London and is survived by his wife, Sonia Jones, who is a vocal coach.

Fans and followers paid tribute to Darbyshire on social media, recalling his contributions to music and expressing their condolences.
