“Dad the Dish” Influencer Avoids Jail for Copyright Violations

Date:

A social media influencer known as ‘Dad the Dish’ on TikTok has avoided jail time after using Facebook to unlawfully stream Sky TV content to a large audience. Simon Hannigan, with over 500,000 TikTok followers, utilized Facebook groups as a platform to share unauthorized streaming links.

Hannigan admitted guilt to engaging in fraudulent activities as a sole trader, concealing and transferring criminal proceeds, and offering services that violated copyright laws. An investigation revealed that he distributed Sky TV log-ins enabling access to more than 3,500 channels.

Following his arrest in March 2022, Hannigan confessed to sharing links but denied infringing copyright laws, claiming lack of control over the system. A significant aspect of the operation was linked to a ‘mother system’ based in Europe, catering to a global audience of 50 million individuals.

Financial records showed that Hannigan received payments labeled as “paid adverts” from customers. A scrutiny of his bank account unveiled 2,644 payments totaling £151,112 under this description. Additional transfers pushed the total to over £152,000, a fact acknowledged by Hannigan.

Despite the legal issues, Hannigan has transformed his life positively and now manages a business named Munchieboxuk, which supports local eateries by offering their food at reduced delivery charges compared to other services. On social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, he showcases cooking videos, amassing 6.4 million likes on TikTok alone.

Recently, Hannigan received a suspended two-year sentence and was ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work at Preston Crown Court.
