Karabo Mokoena, a young woman from South Africa, was tragically murdered in 2017, sparking nationwide outrage and shedding light on the prevalent issue of gender-based violence in the country. Her relationship with Sandile Mantsoe, a seemingly successful and caring businessman, took a dark turn behind closed doors, marked by volatility and emotional abuse. After her sudden disappearance on April 27, 2017, her family raised the alarm, leading to a social media campaign under #FindKarabo in a desperate attempt to locate her.
Tragically, the search concluded with the discovery of Karabo’s body in a shallow grave in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, just two days later. She had been brutally beaten, doused in acid, and set on fire in an appalling attempt to cover up the crime, revealing the heinous nature of her death.
Investigations revealed Mantsoe as the perpetrator, having killed Karabo in his Sandton apartment amid a dispute. Evidence presented in court detailed a violent assault and strangulation, with Mantsoe enlisting the help of others to dispose of her remains.
During the trial, witnesses recounted instances of emotional and physical abuse inflicted by Mantsoe on Karabo throughout their relationship. Despite signs of distress, Karabo harbored hope for change but ultimately fell victim to the tragic circumstances.
In May 2018, Mantsoe was convicted of murder, assault, and obstructing justice, receiving a 32-year prison sentence. The verdict brought a sense of closure to the case, with justice served for Karabo and her grieving loved ones.
