The Canadian women’s flag football team has secured a spot at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles after defeating Mexico 20-6 in a semifinal match at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship held in Duesseldorf, Germany.
Expressing her pride in the team, Canadian women’s team head coach Rachel Lessard highlighted the discipline, resilience, and trust that led to this achievement. The team’s qualification for the 2028 Olympics reflects their hard work and dedication during the process and the growth of Canadian flag football.
In the men’s and women’s world championships, the top two countries earned qualification for the 2028 Olympics, with an additional spot available if the United States, as the host, reached the final. The Canadian women will face the U.S. for the world title, while Mexico and Britain will compete for the remaining women’s Olympic spot in the bronze-medal match.
Despite a 41-36 loss to Italy in the men’s semifinal, Canada still has a chance to secure an Olympic berth in the bronze-medal match against Mexico. The U.S. will compete against Italy for the men’s gold at the world championship.
The Canadian men and women showcased their strength in the quarterfinals, with victories over American Samoa and Austria, respectively. Furthermore, the women’s team secured a close win against the U.S. at the USA Football Summer Series earlier.
Eva Havaris, CEO of Football Canada, commended the women’s team for their hard work and outstanding performance, expressing excitement for their upcoming participation in the Olympic Games. In the semifinal, Sara Parker, Silvia Contreras, and Caroline Moquin-Joubert were among the standout performers for the Canadian teams.
