Boxing Analyst Steve Bunce Mourns Ricky Hatton’s Passing

Date:

BBC boxing analyst Steve Bunce expressed deep sadness upon hearing the news of Ricky Hatton’s passing on BBC Radio 5 Live. Hatton, aged 46, was discovered deceased at his residence in Hyde on Sunday. Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident, stating that they are not treating it as suspicious. Bunce, who was in Northern Ireland after attending a boxing match between Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan, shared his thoughts on the radio show.

During the broadcast, host Steve Crossman repeatedly checked in with Bunce, who was visibly moved, to ensure his comfort while paying tribute to Hatton. Bunce reflected on Hatton’s struggles with mental health and addiction but praised his efforts to confront and overcome these challenges. He mentioned that Hatton had been preparing for an exhibition fight and found solace in the gym.

Reports indicated that Hatton had missed scheduled appearances at the gym and a fight, leading to the visit to his home where he was found. Hatton, known for his openness about mental health issues and substance abuse battles, had previously attempted suicide but had worked on his recovery and reconnected with his family.

Bunce remarked that if this tragedy had occurred a decade ago when Hatton was in a darker place, it might have been more expected, but the news had shocked him given Hatton’s recent positive trajectory. Tributes poured in from the boxing community, with figures like Tyson Fury and Luke Campbell honoring Hatton’s legacy. Hatton, survived by his children and granddaughter, leaves behind a lasting impact in the world of boxing.
