Aldi has revealed intentions to inaugurate 80 new stores in the next two years, marking a substantial £1.6 billion investment. Among these, 21 stores are slated to open within the next 13 weeks, with locations including Shoreditch in London, Durham in the North East, and Kirkintilloch in Scotland.
The budget supermarket has identified 20 priority locations for new sites, including Bromley, Ealing, South Shields, and Witney. With 1,060 existing stores in the UK, Aldi aims to expand to 1,500 stores, generating numerous job opportunities and fostering relationships with British suppliers.
In its latest financial report for the 12 months ending in December 2024, Aldi reported a surge in sales to £18.1 billion. Despite a decline in operating profit to £435.5 million, attributed in part to customer price reductions, infrastructure investments, and increased colleague wages.
Furthermore, Aldi has reduced prices on over 900 products, investing over £300 million in price reductions since the beginning of 2025, particularly in categories like fruit, vegetables, bread, dairy, and household essentials. The supermarket has also raised store assistant wages twice this year, with a minimum hourly rate of £13.02 nationally and £14.35 within the M25.
Giles Hurley, the Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the company’s commitment to offering quality products at competitive prices. Aldi’s focus remains on providing customers with reliable pricing and quality without complicated loyalty schemes.
Aldi’s dedication to affordable groceries has been recognized by consumer group Which?, naming Aldi as the most economical supermarket. A recent comparison of 75 items priced the average Aldi basket at £127.92 in August 2025, slightly cheaper than Lidl’s average basket cost of £128.30 with the Lidl Plus loyalty scheme. Items in the comparison included both branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
