“easyJet Marks 30th Anniversary with Special Flight”

Date:

easyJet celebrated the 30th anniversary of its inaugural flight by replicating the same journey today, fully operated by individuals born in November 1995. The low-cost airline’s first flight took off from London Luton to Glasgow on November 10th, 1995, coinciding with the popularity of acts like Oasis, Robson and Jerome, and Coolio on the UK music charts. To honor this milestone, the 30-year-old pilot and cabin crew were accompanied by retired Captain Fred Rivett, who piloted the maiden flight EZY121 with 122 passengers.

Research commissioned by easyJet on this 30-year anniversary delved into the enduring influence of affordable air travel on British culture, termed the ‘easyJet effect.’ The study highlighted how easyJet’s original 1995 slogan of offering flights for the price of a pair of jeans still holds true today. Despite inflation, easyJet fares have remained relatively stable compared to the rising costs of other everyday goods and experiences, underscoring the airline’s dedication to making air travel accessible to a broader audience.

In 1995, an initial easyJet fare was £29, while a pair of Levi’s Original jeans cost £32. Fast forward to today, an easyJet starting fare stands at £26, with the same jeans priced at £100. Over the past 30 years, there have been significant shifts in holidaying habits among Brits.

A substantial 94 percent of individuals believe that traveling abroad with family is now more convenient than in their childhood, with 83 percent stating they venture overseas more frequently than in previous generations. For many 18-35-year-olds, easyJet has been instrumental in their first experience of holidaying abroad.

The ‘easyJet effect’ extends beyond travel preferences, influencing British tastes in food, beverages, music, and television. A considerable 83 percent of respondents noted changes in their food preferences due to travel experiences, incorporating dishes like burrata, feta, hummus, tapas, and beverages such as Aperol and Campari into their culinary repertoire.

Moreover, 94 percent of the population believes that a wider range of dishes and ingredients are now more accessible for families compared to previous generations, with 90 percent attributing their broadened tastes to increased travel opportunities. The affordability and availability of international flights have also spurred a rise in gig tourism, with 42 percent of Brits opting to attend concerts abroad.

Increased exposure to diverse cultures has impacted viewing habits, with three in five individuals watching more foreign language TV shows and films inspired by their travel experiences. This shift has fueled ‘screen tourism,’ allowing enthusiasts to explore the filming locations of their favorite shows.

The democratization of air travel has revolutionized Brits’ holiday choices, with 92 percent now aiming to visit a new destination each year, compared to revisiting familiar spots. Additionally, 83 percent now opt for destinations further afield, driven by enhanced affordability and direct flight options.

The flexibility and affordability of low-cost air travel have empowered solo travelers, with 74 percent expressing a greater inclination towards solo trips. Furthermore, 70 percent credit lower fares for facilitating long-distance friendships and relationships, fostering a more culturally diverse social circle.

Fred Rivett, the Captain of easyJet’s inaugural flight, reflected on the airline’s evolution, emphasizing its transformative impact on travel accessibility. easyJet’s CEO, Kenton Jarvis, highlighted the airline’s contribution to making travel more inclusive and affordable over the past three decades, shaping the ‘Generation easyJet.’ As easyJet continues to expand, with a new base opening at Newcastle, the airline looks forward to the future and the opportunities it will bring for travelers.
