A compact rocket designed by Estonian company Frankenburg Technology is proving to be a powerful defense tool against Russian drone intrusions in Europe. Known as the “Mark 1,” this missile, measuring just 65cm in length, is specifically crafted to target small drones like those deployed by Russia in recent incursions.
Equipped with solid rocket propellant and autonomous guidance systems, the Mark 1 missiles are tailored to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as the Iranian-made Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 models favored by Russian forces. These missiles are programmed to detonate their warheads within a range of two kilometers from the target, effectively neutralizing the threat.
Frankenburg Technology’s CEO, Kusti Salm, emphasized the critical role these missiles will play in countering Russian drone activities across European territories. Salm stated that the company’s focus is on developing weapons to combat long-range drones operated by Russia, which have posed a significant challenge to Western nations.
In response to escalating drone activities, European countries have been enhancing their defense strategies, with NATO deploying jets to counter Russian incursions. The recent drone sighting near Brussels airport further underscored the urgency for robust defense measures, prompting collaborative efforts among European defense forces.
Sir Richard Knighton, Chief of the UK’s Defence Staff, highlighted the importance of alliance-building to address hybrid threats and safeguard critical infrastructure and airspace. As Europe navigates complex security challenges, strengthening alliances and collective defense mechanisms remain pivotal in ensuring regional security.
