The Canadian government has modified its list of counter-tariffs by removing seafood and fish products and adding items like copper wire and charcoal to maintain equal measures against the U.S. Finance Canada issued a statement announcing the removal of seafood products from the list based on feedback from Canadian industries affected by U.S. tariffs. Ottawa’s response to President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs includes raising duties on American steel and aluminum products to 50%, along with certain seafood items at 25% rates.
A Ministry of Finance spokesperson confirmed that copper wire, charcoal, plaster sheets, tiles, and printed photographs will be included in the revised list and subject to a 50% tariff when the countermeasures take effect on September 8. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne emphasized that the decision to remove U.S. seafood from the counter-tariff list was made in Canada’s best interests after listening to feedback from Canadians. Champagne stated that the update reflected the government’s commitment to acting in the country’s interest.
