“Windsor Developer Calls for Action Against Construction Site Theft”

Date:

Allen Siyou Wu, a developer in Windsor, expressed surprise at the repeated incidents of vandalism and theft plaguing his student housing project. Despite the government’s push for more housing construction in Canada, Wu is disheartened by the lack of support for builders like himself. He called for increased patrols to deter criminals targeting construction sites, emphasizing the need for better security measures.

Wu and his partners are constructing student residences near the University of Windsor campus, investing approximately $1.6 million in the project. The thefts, primarily targeting electrical cables at night, have resulted in significant financial losses for the development. Surveillance footage captured individuals causing damage without stealing anything, leaving Wu puzzled about their motives.

Following multiple incidents, Wu reached out to the mayor’s office for assistance but was advised to consider hiring private security. Frustrated by the expenses incurred in the construction process, Wu highlighted the challenges faced by builders in the region. Norbert Bolger, Chair of the Windsor-Essex Home Builders’ Association, acknowledged the prevalence of such crimes and suggested enhancing security measures at construction sites.

The issue of copper theft extends beyond Windsor, with federal discussions highlighting the risks posed to essential infrastructure. Local authorities are taking steps to address the problem, including stricter regulations for scrap metal transactions. Windsor is contemplating measures such as banning cash transactions for scrap copper to curb theft incidents.
