Skateboarding Legend Dies from Wasp Sting

Date:

A veteran skateboarder renowned for his daring tricks met a tragic end when he was unexpectedly stung by a wasp. Andy Kessler, a key figure in New York City’s street skateboarding scene, revolutionized the sport by introducing ramps for more complex maneuvers. Rising to prominence in the 1970s with the iconic Souls Artists of Zoo York group, Kessler’s legacy was abruptly cut short in 2008 during a construction project in East Hampton Town. Struck by a wasp, he suffered a fatal allergic reaction, succumbing to a heart attack.

Close friend Moose Huerta revealed that the sting triggered an allergic response leading to heart failure, underscoring the severity of such reactions. The skateboarding community mourned Kessler’s untimely passing, with fellow skateboarder Chris Nieratko expressing disbelief and sorrow at the unexpected loss. Known for his advocacy for skate parks and community engagement, Kessler’s impact on the skateboarding world was profound.

Despite facing personal challenges such as a severe injury without health insurance coverage, Kessler’s dedication to the sport never wavered. With the support of his peers, he overcame financial obstacles and continued his skateboarding pursuits. His contributions were recognized with the renaming of a Manhattan skatepark in his honor in 2019, solidifying his lasting influence on the skateboarding community.
