A resident in Margate, Matt Shoul, has taken measures to secure his wheelie bins due to changes in waste collection regulations. Shoul highlighted that ongoing issues with missed and delayed bin collections have led some individuals to unlawfully use neighbors’ bins for their waste disposal.
Various councils nationwide, including Thanet District Council (TDC), implemented a new recycling scheme earlier this year to align with the government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ guidelines. The new system involved weekly food waste pickups and alternating fortnightly collections for general waste and recycling.
As a result of the disruptions, several households have been dealing with overflowing bins for extended periods. Shoul noted that the three months of irregular collections have resulted in people resorting to dumping their rubbish in others’ bins.
Shoul expressed his frustration by stating, “I secured my bins to prevent residents from misusing them. If they contaminate my recycling bin with non-recyclable waste, it hinders my recycling efforts. Likewise, if they use my general waste bin, I have nowhere to dispose of my rubbish. I hope this deters them from using my bins.”
Shoul further criticized the increasingly unreliable bin collection services, with residents sometimes waiting over two weeks for their waste to be collected. He expressed disbelief at the erratic collection schedule, stating, “It’s truly unbelievable. It seems like the schedule is no longer being followed.”
Cllr Steve Albon, the Thanet cabinet member for cleansing and coastal services, acknowledged the inconvenience faced by affected residents, emphasizing that resolving these issues is a top priority. TDC explained that service disruptions occurred as crews addressed challenges stemming from the service modifications, compounded by extreme heat conditions.
