Survivor Recounts Escape from ‘Truck Stop Killer’

Date:

A woman who was hitchhiking shared her harrowing experience of narrowly escaping a deranged truck driver responsible for the torture and murder of 50 women. Vanessa Veselka, aged 56, came close to becoming a victim of the infamous serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades, notorious for transforming his truck into a chamber of horrors during his reign of terror in the United States from 1975 to 1990.

Dubbed the ‘Truck Stop Killer’, Rhoades often preyed on vulnerable hitchhikers, sex workers, and young women traveling alone at truck stops. In the summer of 1985, Vanessa hitched a ride with a trucker near Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, shortly after the discovery of a young teenage hitchhiker’s body at a truck stop dumpster. They journeyed to Ohio, where the ride initially seemed uneventful, with both enjoying Diet Coke and listening to Bruce Springsteen.

However, Vanessa’s nightmare began days later when she accepted a ride from another trucker who turned out to be the sinister Rhoades. She described him as unusually lean for a trucker and noted the impeccable cleanliness of his cab. Initially appearing normal, Rhoades’ demeanor took a dark turn as they drove away.

According to Vanessa’s account in Vanity Fair, Rhoades became aloof and mentioned the deceased girl in the dumpster, introducing her to the ‘Laughing Death Society’ and its macabre philosophy. Subsequently, he pulled the truck over by a wooded area, brandishing a hunting knife.

In a tense moment, Vanessa tried to reason with him, emphasizing it was his choice whether to harm her. Realizing the danger, she fell silent as Rhoades uttered a single word, “run.” Without hesitation, she fled into the woods and hid until she saw the truck depart onto the interstate.

Vanessa, now a successful author, kept the traumatic experience secret for years until 2012 when a friend shared a news story about Rhoades’ killing spree, prompting her to confront her past. Rhoades’ first known murder victim was Regina Kay Walters, a 14-year-old girl abducted in Illinois in 1990. He went on to commit more heinous crimes, including the abduction and torture of newlyweds Patricia Candace Walsh and Douglas Scott Zyskowski.

Rhoades was eventually apprehended in Arizona in 1990 after a state trooper discovered a woman chained inside his truck. He was later convicted of Regina’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
