Starmer Scrutinized Over Deportation Mishap

Date:

In a tough Prime Minister’s Questions session, Keir Starmer faced scrutiny following the deportation of a sex offender who was mistakenly released from prison and sent back to Ethiopia.

The incident involved Hadush Kebatu, who triggered a two-day search after being erroneously released from HMP Chelmsford instead of being transferred to an immigration detention center. He was deported without the possibility of returning to the UK.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood acknowledged her department’s failure to effectively handle recent challenges, stating that it is not yet fully functional.

Despite the deportation issue, Kemi Badenoch shifted the focus to economic matters during the session.

During the session, Keir Starmer criticized Reform UK, labeling the party as “Putin friendly” and warning of the potential negative impact on the UK’s defense. This criticism came amid calls for an investigation into Russian involvement in British politics following the conviction of Reform’s former Welsh leader for accepting bribes to pose pro-Russia inquiries.

Tory MP Sir Edward Leigh expressed optimism for peace in Gaza and Ukraine by highlighting the symbolic significance of a meeting between the King and the Pope. The Prime Minister echoed this sentiment.

The discussion also touched on various topics such as tax increases, workers’ rights, healthcare, sports, and defense policies, with MPs from different parties voicing their concerns and suggestions.

Overall, the Prime Minister addressed a range of issues during the session, emphasizing the government’s efforts to address economic challenges and criticizing the opposition’s past performance. The session highlighted the ongoing debates and priorities within the UK political landscape.
