Djokovic Shocked in U.S. Open Upset

Date:

Novak Djokovic battled through physical and internal issues, committing numerous errors and falling short against a determined, younger opponent who showed no fear facing the legendary tennis star. The 39-year-old exited the U.S. Open after a grueling five-set match against Mariano Navone, losing 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a marathon lasting four hours and 36 minutes in New York.

This defeat marked Djokovic’s earliest exit from a Grand Slam in two decades, dating back to the 2006 Australian Open, and his first-ever first-round loss at the U.S. Open. The 24-time major champion struggled with physical discomfort, experiencing cramps, vomiting, and pain throughout the match. Despite receiving medical treatment and attempting to push through, Djokovic’s performance was hampered by 70 unforced errors, culminating in his loss.

Reflecting on the match, Djokovic expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “I didn’t enjoy myself… It was an awful feeling on the court for me.” With this unexpected defeat occurring exactly 21 years after his U.S. Open debut, speculation arises about Djokovic’s future participation in Grand Slam events. Following the match, Djokovic indicated a need to reassess his situation and determine his next steps in the sport.

In contrast, Mariano Navone, Djokovic’s victorious opponent, described the experience as surreal, playing against his childhood idol on such a prestigious stage. Moving on to other matches, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez advanced to the second round after defeating Shuai Zhang of China in straight sets, showcasing a solid performance.

Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov secured a victory in men’s singles, overcoming Miomir Kecmanovic in a competitive match. Additionally, Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz started their U.S. Open title defenses successfully with wins in their respective matches. Sabalenka defeated Camila Osorio, while Alcaraz, returning from injury, triumphed over Roman Safiullin.

On the other hand, Venus Williams faced a tough defeat in her 26th U.S. Open singles appearance, losing to Sofia Kenin in straight sets in a late-night match. Despite a valiant effort in the second set, Williams struggled to turn the tide in her favor, ultimately succumbing to Kenin’s strong play.

As the tournament progresses, notable results include Amanda Anisimova’s dominant victory over Ashlyn Krueger and Stefanos Tsitsipas’s triumph over Arthur Fils after making changes to his coaching setup. These matches set the stage for an exciting and unpredictable U.S. Open tournament.
