John F. Kennedy’s sole grandson has verified his intention to uphold the family’s political tradition by entering the race for Congress.
Jack Schlossberg, son of Caroline Kennedy, has reassured supporters of continuing the renowned dynasty’s influence by declaring his candidacy via email. The 32-year-old aims to take over from long-serving Democrat Jerrold Nadler in New York City’s 12th district.
Nadler, aged 78, is retiring after a 34-year tenure. Schlossberg, known for his active presence on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, with over 1.7 million followers, often directs his attention towards Donald Trump and right-wing politics.
In an interview with The New York Times, Schlossberg explained that his bold online persona is a strategic move to engage with younger voters in today’s “toxic, polluted” media landscape.
Asserting the need for effective fighters in the evolving political climate, he emphasized the importance of electing individuals who comprehend policy and can navigate new media platforms, advocating for a fresh approach within the Democratic Party.
With a background in Congress and the State Department, alongside experiences working with his mother during her diplomatic assignments, Schlossberg expressed pride in upholding the Kennedy legacy of public service. He drew inspiration from President Kennedy and his uncle Ted Kennedy, a longtime Senate veteran.
Despite his controversial online activity, including public disputes with relatives like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Schlossberg believes his viral moments serve to enhance political awareness among otherwise disengaged voters.
Acknowledging his privileged upbringing, Schlossberg positions himself as a non-establishment Democrat, drawing motivation from grassroots successes like that of New York’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
He advocates for the Democratic Party to reclaim its identity as a voice for artists, innovators, and counterculture, countering what he perceives as the fear-driven politics of the Trump era.
While the competition for Nadler’s seat is anticipated to be fierce, the Kennedy name retains a significant influence and nostalgic appeal for many voters, symbolizing a family that shaped American liberalism in the 20th century.
Schlossberg aims to reignite that legacy, expressing a desire to return to the essence of challenging the status quo that he associates with being a Democrat.
