“Yvette Cooper Urges Swift Aid Delivery to Gaza”

Date:

Staring across the Jordanian landscape towards Palestine, Yvette Cooper expressed deep frustration. Warehouses holding crucial aid items are situated just under 40 miles from the West Bank border, along the route to Gaza. Despite the ceasefire agreement, Israeli restrictions have led to thousands of tons of essential supplies like food and tents being stockpiled in depots instead of reaching the needy in Gaza.

To the west of Amman, the capital of Jordan, lies the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge, a vital crossing into the West Bank. However, this crossing has been closed to aid trucks since September following the deaths of two Israeli soldiers near the area.

Accompanying the Foreign Secretary on a four-day journey through the Middle East during a critical phase in the peace process after years of conflict, I experienced the challenges firsthand. Travelling in the extensive entourage of officials, security personnel, and advisors, we navigated the traffic at high speed as we moved through various locations.

Starting in Bahrain, Ms. Cooper participated in a security summit before heading to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for important discussions. Despite the glamour of the oil-rich region, the dire situation in Gaza remained a top priority.

The focus of the trip was on converting a fragile ceasefire into a lasting peace and addressing the obstacles preventing aid from reaching the war-torn Gaza. The urgency of reopening the Jordanian aid route into Gaza was emphasized by the sight of thousands of metric tons of food languishing in a World Food Programme warehouse near Amman.

Volunteers mentioned that essential items like wheat flour, canned goods, and medical supplies had been sitting in the warehouse for months while Gaza residents faced severe food shortages. The proximity of the aid to Gaza underscored the critical need for swift action in reopening the Jordanian route.

Ms. Cooper highlighted the importance of expediting aid delivery, setting up a maternity field hospital in Gaza, and improving healthcare services for Gazans. She emphasized the need for Israel to lift restrictions on border crossings as outlined in the recent peace agreement brokered by Donald Trump.

Reflecting on her visit, Ms. Cooper stressed the immediate actions that could be taken to alleviate the suffering in Gaza. Urgency was emphasized in addressing the pressing needs and facilitating quick solutions to improve the humanitarian situation.

In addition, Ms. Cooper mentioned her efforts to support the establishment of a maternity field hospital in Gaza and the urgency in rebuilding healthcare infrastructure and providing essential supplies to the region. She reiterated the importance of swift action in addressing the immediate needs of the Gaza population.
