Households are being informed about the contents suitable for food waste bins, including a surprising item. New regulations mandate that local councils provide dedicated food waste collections for all residences. While some councils offer free replacement biodegradable bags to line the bins, others require residents to procure their own after using the initial roll, which can incur an additional cost of approximately £1.80 for 20 bags, leading to dissatisfaction among some individuals.
An interesting revelation by a council on Facebook suggested an alternative for lining food caddies, which not only saves money but also reduces waste. Various councils, such as Scottish Borders Council, Devon County Council, City of Lincoln Council, and Sandwell Council, employ similar practices allowing the use of plastic bags and empty bread bags for this purpose.
City of Lincoln Council explained the process, highlighting the removal of bags at the processing plant through specialized machinery, enabling the use of any bag as a liner. The bags are then redirected to an Energy from Waste facility for energy generation, providing a second life as a food waste liner before their ultimate disposal. Reusing plastic bags at home was encouraged as a practical option.
Devon County Council emphasized the reuse of any bag as a liner for waste caddies, eliminating the need for special compostable bags. Despite efforts, food waste remains a significant issue in Devon, with a considerable portion of general household waste comprising avoidable food items, some of which still in packaging.
Recycling food waste and plastic bags has multifaceted benefits, as all liners are extracted at processing facilities before the food waste treatment process. The bags are converted into energy at Energy from Waste facilities, contributing to energy production and liquid fertilizers. However, certain local authorities like Durham County Council, Stockport Council, and Rochdale Council enforce strict regulations on using only biodegradable bags due to different processing methods.
While rules may vary among councils, most share similar guidelines. Redcar and Cleveland Council outlined the permissible food waste items and emphasized the prohibition of certain items. Individual councils’ regulations should be consulted to ensure compliance with specific guidelines.
