Ralph Bulger, the father of the tragic victim James Bulger, has issued a sincere caution to the authorities regarding Jon Venables, who may soon be released from incarceration. Venables, who was just 10 years old at the time, along with Robert Thompson, abducted and murdered two-year-old James in Merseyside back in 1993. Despite being released from prison in 2001, Venables was later reincarcerated in 2010 and 2017 due to offenses related to child abuse images. Ralph Bulger has implored prison officials to maintain custody of the “predatory paedophile killer” to safeguard the community.
Venables’ recent bid for parole was denied in December 2023, as officials deemed him a continuing threat and lacking in transparency with probation authorities. This denial follows a previous rejection in 2020. Ralph, aged 59, has voiced his concerns about Venables’ potential release, which could occur before Christmas, emphasizing the ongoing risk he poses to society.
In an interview with The Sun, Ralph emphasized, “Venables is more dangerous today than ever before, and releasing him could mean he ends up living next to an unsuspecting family, putting lives at risk. He has the potential to commit further crimes if set free.” Ralph highlighted the lack of awareness among many families today about the heinous crime committed by Venables, who is shielded by an anonymity order, leaving communities uninformed about his presence.
James’ parents have been granted the right to attend the upcoming parole hearing and provide impact statements. While Ralph has chosen not to attend in person, he will present his statement via video link or in writing. Stressing the importance of addressing the parole board directly, Ralph aims to convey the devastating impact of Venables’ actions and issue a stark warning about the potential consequences of his release.
Denise Fergus, speaking exclusively to the Mirror in May, expressed her desire to confront her son’s killer at the parole hearing and assert her enduring presence. Fergus remarked on the emotional toll of the situation, questioning the basis for Venables’ renewed parole application given his history of reoffending. Determined to seek justice for her son, Denise affirmed her unwavering stance against forgiveness and her belief that Venables remains a serious threat to society.
