Birmingham Schools Close Early Ahead of High-Risk Match

Date:

Several Birmingham schools are closing early in anticipation of the upcoming Aston Villa versus Maccabi Tel Aviv match. The Europa League fixture at Villa Park tonight has been deemed “high risk” by West Midlands Police after a thorough assessment based on previous incidents. Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters were prohibited from attending the game last month due to safety worries, drawing criticism from politicians, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Five protest groups, representing various perspectives, are expected to be present this evening, accompanied by approximately 700 police officers to ensure the safety of football enthusiasts and locals.

Protests are anticipated amidst global condemnation of Israel regarding the escalating death toll in Gaza. Calls have been mounting on UEFA and FIFA to exclude Israel’s national teams and clubs from international competitions. United Nations experts have also urged sporting sanctions following a UN commission’s assertion that Israel is engaging in genocide in Gaza.

Despite the extensive police presence, Birmingham schools are preparing for early closures. Mansfield Green E-ACT Primary Academy, situated just a short distance from Villa Park, will dismiss students at 2pm instead of the usual 3:15pm closing time. The school communicated this change to parents in advance, citing the Villa match as the reason for the early closure.

Another school reportedly following suit is BOA Creative, Digital and Performing Arts Academy, which is expected to close at 1:15pm. The principal informed parents via email about the early closure, attributing it to planned protests in the area.

Former Labour MP, Lord Ian Austin, criticized the decision to close schools early, labeling it a “disgrace” and urging local leaders to focus on enhancing education rather than exacerbating tensions. A spokesperson from E-ACT Mansfield Green Academy stated that the early closure was advised by the local authority to avoid congestion and disruptions, emphasizing the priority of ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.

Schools in the vicinity are taking similar precautions, with authorities expressing gratitude for the understanding and cooperation of parents and caregivers.
