Ontario has allocated $10 million towards six skilled trades training programs through its Skills Development Fund. This initiative gained attention following a report by the province’s auditor general last year, highlighting concerns over the fairness, transparency, and accountability in selecting successful applicants and distributing funds from the $2.5-billion program.
Integrity commissioner Cathryn Motherwell is currently investigating claims from opposition parties that Labour Minister David Piccini violated ethics rules in the allocation of skills training funding. To address past issues, the government has implemented changes in the selection process for the sixth round of funding. These changes now require applicants to disclose any involvement of registered lobbyists and scrutinize individuals associated with the applications along with the organizations.
The latest $10 million in funding will support various projects, including construction job training led by the YMCA, automotive service training, and a program aimed at providing young individuals with skills in the electrical trades. Minister Piccini emphasized that the fund plays a crucial role in helping individuals establish fulfilling careers and bolstering the workforce responsible for constructing homes and infrastructure in Ontario.
