The British government has strongly criticized the intimidating and aggressive actions of anti-immigrant protestors who gathered at a port in southern England, where migrants were disembarked after crossing the English Channel.
During a demonstration in Portsmouth on Sunday night, hundreds of protestors, many in dark attire and masks, confronted police in an effort to halt lifeboats from bringing migrants ashore. Subsequently, they attempted to impede buses transporting the newcomers to an asylum seeker processing center.
In a statement, the government emphasized the importance of peaceful protest in a democratic society but warned against actions that escalate into disorder. The incident in Portsmouth followed a similar protest in Dover on Saturday, where masked anti-immigration protestors obstructed roads leading to the ferry port, causing congestion and disruption to travelers and cargo vehicles.
It appears that both protest groups were led by Daniel Thomas, an associate of veteran far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson. The UK has faced challenges in preventing individuals, with over 40,000 crossing the English Channel last year, prompting politicians like Nigel Farage of Reform UK to label it a crisis and fueling anti-immigration sentiments.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s administration credits enhanced law enforcement collaboration between the UK and France for reducing this year’s crossings by more than 40% compared to 2025. The boat carrying around 140 people to Portsmouth departed from Normandy, a significant distance from the usual departure points near Calais, increasing the journey’s length and risk.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency of Britain reported that lifeboats, a coast guard helicopter, and a plane were deployed in the operation to safely bring the migrants ashore.
