There were previous rumors that certain Fire devices could lose access to the popular streaming app, and now it has been confirmed that starting tomorrow, June 3, this block will be enforced.
Amazon has stated, “Netflix will no longer be supported on some first-generation Fire TV devices that were released over a decade ago.”
This change impacts owners of Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014), Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014), or Amazon Fire TV (2014).
If you rely on these devices to watch shows like Drive to Survive, Adolescence, and Bad Thoughts, it is recommended to purchase a new device promptly.
The reason for this block is believed to be related to a technology called AV1 codec, which enables streaming platforms like Netflix to offer higher-resolution quality at an additional cost, a feature not compatible with older Fire TV Sticks.
Netflix wants to ensure that customers do not pay for services they cannot access, which may explain why the app will be disabled on these older Fire TV Sticks.
Concerned about potential impact? To verify your Fire TV device, go to Settings > My Fire TV > About on your Fire TV. If your device is on the list below, Netflix will cease to function this week:
– Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014)
– Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014)
– Amazon Fire TV (2014)
“Netflix will continue to be available on all other Fire TV devices,” Amazon confirmed.
