“U.S. Envoys Seek Peace in Ukraine Amid Russian Attacks”

Date:

U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in positive discussions in Kyiv on Sunday during their inaugural official trip to Ukraine as part of a renewed effort to halt over 4½ years of Russia’s extensive invasion. The visit by the American envoys comes after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, with both sides intensifying their aerial assaults. The Trump administration’s focus on the Iran conflict over the past six months has slowed Washington’s efforts to cease the hostilities.

Russia has recently employed high-speed, jet-powered drones, leading to the constant sound of air-raid sirens becoming a daily occurrence in Kyiv. Progress along the 1,250-kilometer front line has been challenging for troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after two rounds of talks with the U.S. officials, emphasized the objective of achieving a “just, fair peace” to prevent any future aggression against Ukraine.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the American negotiators for their visit to Kyiv, marking their first time in Ukraine. He announced that the upcoming discussions would involve national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany. Witkoff remarked, “We’ve had very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we’re very encouraged.” Kushner highlighted President Donald Trump’s perspective on not only ending the current war but also establishing conditions for lasting peace.

A senior Ukrainian official, speaking anonymously, revealed that much of the dialogue focused on navigating through the winter and pre-winter actions. The recent meeting in Moscow lasted over three hours, with discussions centered on economic matters and potential joint projects benefiting both Russia and the U.S. The last confirmed visit to Moscow by Witkoff and Kushner occurred in January, where talks with Putin were also held at the Kremlin.

Despite a pause in strikes on each other’s capitals agreed upon by Putin and Zelenskyy, both countries exchanged fire overnight into Sunday. Russian attacks in various Ukrainian regions resulted in casualties, while Ukraine’s air force intercepted a significant number of drones and missiles launched by Russia. In retaliation, a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia led to casualties as well.

Hopes remain mixed among the people on the ground in Kyiv. While some, like Nataliia Lipei, whose son was killed in the conflict, are optimistic about the talks bringing an end to the war, others, such as video editor Oleksandr Pastukhov, are skeptical about the impact of the envoys’ visit. Pope Leo, in his Sunday prayer, renewed his call for peace in Ukraine and expressed hope for positive outcomes from the ongoing negotiations.
