The union representing Air Canada pilots has expressed concerns regarding actions they deem as “retaliatory and anti-labour” by Scandinavian Airlines, currently led by Air Canada’s incoming CEO, Anko van der Werff. Scandinavian Airlines Captain Mattias Åman Thiel, who also serves as the chair of the SAS section of the Swedish Pilots’ Association, was recently terminated, a move confirmed by the airline without specifying the reasons behind it. Both the union and the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations have called for Thiel’s reinstatement, labeling his dismissal as unjustified.
ALPA Canada President Tim Perry criticized the firing in a letter to van der Werff, emphasizing the importance of fair treatment for pilots. The union has urged for Thiel’s immediate reinstatement, with Perry warning that the CEO’s handling of this situation will reflect on his future interactions with Canadian airline pilots. Despite requests for comment, Air Canada has declined to discuss the matter involving another carrier.
SAS defended its decision, stating that it does not comment on individual employment matters. The airline emphasized its commitment to the Scandinavian labour model and collaborative relationships with employees and their representatives, asserting that all employees are treated equally regardless of their role or tenure. Thiel’s dismissal is being legally challenged by the pilots’ union, which asserts that he was working remotely during the alleged violations cited by the employer.
Tristan Okkonen, chair of the Swedish Airline Pilots Association, expressed shock over Thiel’s dismissal, citing disagreements over salary negotiations and pilots’ work actions in the past. The Canadian pilots’ union leader voiced concerns about the impact of this situation on the incoming Air Canada CEO’s rapport with employees, emphasizing the importance of trust in fostering a healthy work environment. Plans are underway to garner support from members to advocate for Thiel’s reinstatement.
