The Israeli government has issued a warning to Gaza, threatening to escalate targeted strikes if Hamas does not stop the use of kites by Palestinians, including children, flying towards Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on a social media platform on Sunday, mentioned a meeting held with Defence Minister Israel Katz to discuss the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites originating from Gaza. The meeting was attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the head of the National Security Council, and senior officials of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
Netanyahu emphasized that unless the launches of kites cease immediately, Israel will increase targeted strikes against those responsible and evacuate the population from areas used for launching kites, drones, and balloons. He stated that Israel is determined to protect its communities and citizens’ sense of security from any threats by Hamas or other entities in Gaza.
Meanwhile, 13-year-old Omar Halawa finds solace in flying kites by the shore in Khan Younis amidst the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Omar explained that flying kites brings joy as there is little else to uplift spirits in Gaza. Despite Netanyahu’s warnings, he expressed that they are children who seek peace and happiness, not conflict with Hamas.
Prior to the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel by Hamas, kites and balloons from Gaza caused fires and damage in Israel. Recent Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including children, in Gaza, prompting international concerns. The ongoing conflict has led to significant casualties on both sides, with Hamas accusing Israel of aggression and violating international laws.
Omar and his family fear the consequences of flying kites due to escalating tensions and security concerns. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the importance of preserving simple joys for children amid the turbulent situation. As the children adapt to the changing circumstances, they continue to fly kites, albeit in different locations.
The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the complexities of the conflict, with civilians, particularly children, caught in the crossfire.
