“Montreal Victoire’s Walter Cup Trophy Missing”

Date:

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) reported that the Montreal Victoire’s Walter Cup trophy is currently missing as it failed to reach its intended destination, according to a statement released on Friday. The league is collaborating with the shipping company to locate the trophy that was scheduled to be delivered to Lethbridge, Alberta, for an event with Victoire forward Dara Greig. However, the container arrived in Lethbridge without the Walter Cup, causing Greig to postpone her scheduled appearance with the trophy at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.

Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not assign a dedicated individual to accompany the trophy during its travels to be with the players. The missing Walter Cup is a version awarded to championship-winning teams for their possession, distinct from the one presented on the ice upon winning, which is permanently housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Both the original trophy and the team’s version, crafted by Tiffany & Co., are sterling silver and weigh approximately 35 pounds, standing at 24 inches in height and 13 inches wide. The cup features six W’s representing the league’s original franchises and rests on hockey stick-shaped rods, with the base showcasing past championship teams.

Montreal claimed the Walter Cup by defeating Ottawa in a best-of-five series in May, marking the first PWHL championship for a Canadian team. The trophy is named after PWHL founder and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and his wife, Kimbra.
